The Entrepreneurial Spirit of Downtown Stillwater

In the past year many areas have fallen upon hard times.  With such ominous news, it is easy to forget that the entrepreneurial spirit is still very much alive in the small towns and urban neighborhoods all across America. In some places Main Street America has fallen on really hard times – given way to the big box stores, or lack of imagination from civic leaders and an unprecedented level of recession.

Historically, Downtown Stillwater was the center for all activity in the community. Urban sprawl took a toll on our once thriving Downtown.  Many businesses closed shop or moved to the newer shopping areas in town, and Downtown became more of a “forgotten” place and less of a shopping business center.  When community and city leaders came together to form a plan to revitalize the area, they found that the entrepreneurial spirit is not only alive, but is beginning to grow again.

Over the past year Downtown Stillwater has had many new businesses open.  These businesses include, The Quilting Post, Uptown Beauty Salon, Zannotti’s Wine Bar, Louie’s Grill and Bar, Project Gallery, Bed Mart Furniture Gallery, Flourishes and the Party Box.  Businesses who have stayed true to there Downtown roots are also growing, meeting the needs of those individuals who are faithful Downtown shoppers and those who are “discovering” us for the first time.

Our Downtown business owners share many common characteristics: Most are family owned and operated by husband and wife, a pair of fun loving sisters or best even best friends.  All make shopping about the service and experience, not the products.  All exude passion for they offer, whether it’s spotlighting a local artist, turning a sidewalk sale into a happening, or taking 30 minutes to offer suggestions to customers who really appreciate great service and a knowledgeable staff.

I encourage you to explore Downtown Stillwater, meet the people who have such a passion for not only their business but also the community. I am sure you will find out what makes our Downtown so special!

See you soon, in Downtown Stillwater!
