(STILLWATER, OKLA. / Aug. 6, 2009) — The Oklahoma State University Athletic Department is once again collaborating with the Stillwater Business Improvement District, know as Downtown Stillwater to offer a new parking service (free parking and a bus ride to and from the stadium) for fans throughout the season, beginning Saturday, Sept. 5 for the Cowboys vs. Georgia game. "Downtown Game Day Parking was a tremendous success last year,” said John Bartley, chairman of the Business Improvement District board. “Passenger numbers and the amount of people shopping and dining downtown increased almost every game.” Bartley believes the partnership between Downtown Stillwater and OSU Athletics has been beneficial to both parties. "This year we hope to have a bus shelter and more pre-game activities to enhance the service," he said. Brandon Armstrong, event coordinator with the OSU POSSE office, said the bus will begin running three hours before kickoff and drop off passengers on Hall of Fame Ave., near Knoblock St. The bus will continue to run throughout the game, he said. There will be signs indicating where to park and a bus picking up and dropping off passengers at 7th Ave. and Lewis St. Parking is on a first-come, first-serve basis, he said. Parking downtown is free and about 500 parking spots will be available.
“After the game, fans riding the bus back to downtown will meet on Hall of Fame Ave. where they were dropped off,” Armstrong said. “The bus will run about every 30 minutes or so, depending on traffic, and won’t stop until they are confident there are no more passengers.” Bartley said he has spoken to several downtown business owners and that they are excited about the continued partnership with OSU Athletics. “We also have many new businesses for fans to take advantage of before and after the games,” Bartley said. “With so many unique eating and drinking establishments, as well as specialty shops, that there is sure to be something for everyone.” Angela McLaughlin, Business Improvement District coordinator, said she hopes the program will only continue to grow and provide a boost for downtown businesses, as well as a game-day atmosphere. “We want fans to come downtown, browse around, and give the area a buzz before they head to the game,” McLaughlin said. “We want to add to the game-day experience.” Some of the parking spaces include the lots west of Stillwater Municipal at 7th Ave. and Lewis St.; the covered parking lot across the street; and the Banc First parking lot on 808 S. Main St. For more information, contact McLaughlin at (405) 742-8359 or visit www.downtownstw.com. -30- About Downtown Stillwater: Established in 2007 and funded through annual assessments, Downtown Stillwater (Business Improvement District #1) is a formal organization of property owners and commercial tenants — with support from the City of Stillwater — dedicated to economic development, cultural growth and a commitment to create a welcoming environment for all who live, work, play and dine in the area. |
